A few will tolerate low light levels-but no plant will survive in zero light. Most houseplants are tropical in origin, which means they need bright, indirect light, because their natural habitat is on the forest floor, sheltered by larger plants. Light is probably the most important thing to consider when you're shopping for a new plant. If you're a bit nervous about killing (yet another) houseplant, take heart: There are actually tons of beautiful houseplants that don't need to be coddled or won't dry up and die the first time you forget to water them.
